by Jake Larkin
My son, Jake, has been playing drums in one form or another since he was six years old. He plays the kit drums (Jazz is his favorite genre), djembe from West Africa, and most recently, the Hang Drum. The Hang Drum allows him to introduce melody into his rhythmic playing and he took to it quite naturally.
Here are 6 albums he has recorded. My partner and I offered him some themes, and he played anywhere from 35 to 60 minutes on the theme, as he heard it in his head. I will often play them one after the other while I work.
They are very relaxing and can be used as the background to meditation.
The Hang Drum (also called Hand Pan) is a unique “drum” made of thick metal and looks like an inverted steel drum. When played softly and with reverence, it creates heavenly sounds, perfect for meditation, healing and relaxation.
